Rainbow Magic, Priming, and Prejudice - Mind Control (Part 2)
Hey there, and welcome to Sai-cology with me, Saira. Today we’re continuing our foray into MIND CONTROL! We’ll be first talking about using triggers to change thought, then we’ll be talking a bit about prejudice and how we can reduce it.
INTRO
“Rainbow Magic”
So, Color Mind Control. Colors are more than just the reflection of light, it is powerful stuff! Since we’re talking about rainbows let’s do this lightning round of ROY G. BIV.
Priming
o Priming is bringing certain thoughts or memories to the forefront of people’s minds to make them think of, fell or act a certain way. It is also known as stimulating or triggering. Priming can make people more competitive, more artistic, more calm, etc. So if you want someone to want pizza, you would bring up images or commercials of pizza throughout their day, or talk about pizza places or ingredients casually, then when you ask them what they want for dinner at the end of the day, they’ll most likely say pizza.
Primacy and Recency
We remember first and last over the middle - that's why it's helpful to have intros and conclusions.
In a class you can break this down by using 20 minutes to learn new things, 10 minutes to review, then the final 10 minutes to assign meaning and put the information into practice.
What She Said
Anchoring is when we heavily rely on the initial piece of information when making decisions. If there is some sort of suggested reference point or average, we will adjust what we think to say or do accordingly. So in the case of the guess how many jelly beans in this jar, if multiple people in front of us say 100, we’re more likely to pull our guess closer to 100.
Reducing Prejudice
Now, let’s talk about stereotypes— and how to change them. Here are some techniques to counteract implicit bias. Counter Stereotypic Imagining, where you imagine others positively and replace stereotypes with positive examples. Also, if you promote counter stereotypes – such as high exposure to strong, female leaders, it creates new associations, combating negative stereotypes.
Individuation is when you focus on specific individuals rather than a group. Perspective Taking is to step in the shoes of the stereotyped group and finally, increasing contact opportunities which is having more interactions with those in the stereotyped group.
Today, we talked about the power of colors, other ways to prime people’s minds, and about reducing stereotypes. Next week we’ll
move on to controlling what others FEEL.
