But how? You ask. Well, I’ll tell you. You’re watching Sai-cology with me, Saira the show that uses Science and Psychology to help you change your life.
SAICOLOGY INTRO
Well, it’s the big finale, and I wanted to send you all off with the best advice I’ve got so you can go forth and make the world a better place with all your newfound Sai-cology knowledge.
Habit
Much like conditioning - habits can be powerful changers of our lives. Habituating tasks that will embetter us towards our goal is really the first main step. So, make yourself go to the gym every day, make yourself sit down for an hour and really work towards your goals. Don’t let yourself miss a day because it’ll snowball. If you want other people involved to also become invested, make it a habit or routine for them as well - to get that morning hello from you, that weekly call - so if it doesn’t happen they will notice your absence - you can apply this to make people more invested in you and realizing their dependence on you, this working like the mere exposure effect to get them to think of you because they believe they depend on you. One thing that may suck though is that as things become habit, people react less and less to it, so it may be pretty unfulfilling when your yearly tradition once was amazing and now is lackluster and routine.
Actually, Actualization
In order for us to become our best self, our needs must be fulfilled and this is prioritized in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This says that we must first have food, sleep and air, then safety, then belonging and love and finally self esteem before we can grow and feel fulfilled.
Mountains to Molehills
This is common knowledge, but you also want to break down large tasks into smaller ones and reward yourself consistently and appropriately for small things. When you reward yourself make it immediately after the action and related to it so that you start to relate the reward to the action of productivity.
Imagine it’s Real
When trying to get others to help you make your dreams come true, get them to image something so vivid that they feel it is real - it transforms it to something that belongs in their head as well. This is why books have such strong connections to people over even movies - because the images come from our own mind. This also helps people think they had something to do with the idea, and people are always more passionate about their own ideas than others.
Reverse Reverse
Similarly, the cliches of reverse psychology are indeed effective. You can get someone to oppose an idea by presenting the alternative in a worse light. “You don’t have to take the bus, They just opened a great new trail that runs the full five miles from here to the mall.” Also, talk around your idea and plant clues so they will form and suggest the idea. Another way is to undersell - for example say that something would be good enough for what they need, but just barely - so they’ll be tempted to upgrade a level to have some wiggle room.
Fake it Til You Make It
The power of self-fulfilling prophecies are underutilized and underrecognized. You need to project and believe that things will happen, and you will subconsciously take steps into making it happen, and others will to, thus making it more likely to actually come true. This can work negatively too - if we believe we will fail, we will most likely not try our hardest and steps towards our failure will fall into place.
Your Own Worst Enemy
One thing to watch out for is self-sabotage - This includes procrastination, self-medicating with alcohol or drugs, comfort eating or anything else that we do that gets in our own ways. So watch out for that and do your best to be your own best friend instead.
So, that was it. 16 some episodes of tips and tricks to help you improve your life and learn something new about science and psychology.
